To spread the word about fire prevention to students living off Grounds, representatives from the University of Virginia and the city of Charlottesville go door to door in the annual “Stop and Knock” fire safety campaign, scheduled from August 30-September 1 from 4-6 p.m. this year.
The Commonwealth of Virginia has combined its three sales tax holidays into one three-day tax-free weekend from August 5 through August 7.  During this weekend, customers save state sales and use tax on qualifying items, including hurricane and emergency preparedness supplies.

The University of Virginia became the 18th college in the United States to be named a HEARTSafe Campus by the National Collegiate Emergency Medical Services Foundation (NCEMSF) at its 23rd annual conference in February. 
The UVA Police Department invites the public to tour the new public safety substation on The Corner, on Wednesday, Feb. 3, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  The substation is located at 1413 University Ave,  (the former location of the Freeman-Victorius Framing Shop).

In an effort to remind Virginians to prepare now for upcoming winter weather, Governor McAuliffe has proclaimed Nov. 29 through Dec. 5 as Winter Preparedness Week.  The National Weather Service predicts above-median precipitation amounts for December-February due to a strong El Niño effect, coupled with possible below-median temperatures.
In an ongoing effort to improve pedestrian safety, the University has installed a new kind of crosswalk light warning system, called Rapid Flashing Beacons (RFBs), at 16 crosswalks in and around the University.  Several crosswalks are in new locations, but the majority of RFBs replace the former in-road LED flashing light system.
