The UVA Police Department invites the public to tour the new public safety substation on The Corner, on Wednesday, Feb. 3, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  The substation is located at 1413 University Ave,  (the former location of the Freeman-Victorius Framing Shop). At the open house, the public can tour behind-the-scenes spaces and meet representatives from the University Police Department (UPD) and the UVA Ambassador program.  Light refreshments will be served.

Established in partnership with the Charlottesville Police Department, the substation provides space for both police departments to engage with the community and conduct other work.  The substation is designed to enhance the safety of the Corner area by enabling police officers assigned to that area to spend more time in the vicinity.

UVA Ambassadors, now staffed by Richmond-based RMC Events, will be present in the substation 24 hours a day for general assistance and questions.   Ambassadors are carefully screened, unarmed security officers, clad in neon yellow polo shirts, parkas and rain jackets. From 4 p.m. to 7 a.m., Ambassadors patrol a wide area that students frequent.

Although the public safety substation will be staffed 24/7 by UVA Ambassadors, the University Police remind everyone to call 9-1-1 for all emergencies and to report crimes.  The UVA community should never feel that they are “bothering” University Police by calling 9-1-1.  The police want you to call.    For more information, contact the University Police Department at 434-924-7166.
