An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable device used to administer an electric shock to the heart and restore its normal rhythm during sudden cardiac arrest. Early defibrillation is the only treatment for sudden cardiac arrest, and a quick response helps to achieve positive outcomes. UVA Emergency Management is embarking upon a three-phase process to replace 225 strategically placed AEDs across Grounds. Phase one is almost complete, and phase two will begin later this summer.
